This month I met with the creative & talented Paul McJimpsey of "Get Loose Promotions", a.k.a Jlo the resident promoter for Merchant City’s muso hot spot Maggie Mays!
Last Month he booked upcoming blues artist Marcus Bonfanti straight after his debut appearance on STV’s The Hour to play Maggie Mays. When I asked Jlo, what’s his vision for Maggie Mays was he insightfully spoke about spotting a niche in the gig market. “I run various gig slots appealing to different segments of the music scene in Merchant City. Saturday 5-8pm gigs came out of friends telling me they had nowhere to go after the football match; most music gigs kick off after 8. I realised the demographic was the Britpop generation 25-35 who were looking for places to catch a bite and see good live music, so I booked a band to play cover songs people instantly recognise. I’ve made down stairs in Maggie Mays totally focus on the muso scene, so you can see original material by decent upcoming bands.”
Finally we asked Jlo our favourite question “what do you love about the Merchant City” Jlo’s enthusiastic response was “ Merchant city to me is the musical hub of Glasgow, where like minded people of all ages can come and appreciate good music, good food in relaxed yet cool atmosphere. They can feel free to express their musical passion via various means such as dress sense, hair style etc without the fear of harassment or ridicule" .
