Old Police Boxes

Description:

No the Doctor hasn't landed on Wilson Street. This is in fact one of the four remaining original TARDIS-style police boxes on street in the UK - the others are on Buchanan Street, the High Street near the Cathedral and by the Botanic Gardens in the city's West End. They are subtly different to the London boxes that the TARDIS is based on and were painted red up until the 1970s. They were used as mini police stations until becoming redundant in the 1970s with the advent of walkie talkies and other changes. They were saved from the scrapheap by Glasgow Building Preservation Trust and the Civil Defence and Emergency Service Preservation Trust in the late 1990s and are now seeing new life serving coffee or cappacino!

The boxes are situated on Glassford/Wilson Street and High/John Knox Street.
