Necropolis

Description: Standing timelessly on a large whinstone outcrop above Glasgow Cathedral looms the brooding spectacle of Glasgow Necropolis, laid out by the Merchants' House of Glasgow in 1831, and modelled on the famous Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris. Its soaring monuments and mausoleums puncture the skyline with almost every notable Architect working in Glasgow, including Bryce, Hamilton, Alexander 'Greek' Thomson and Mackintosh, having played their part in fashioning this fascinating place into one of the most remarkable cemeteries in Europe. Today the Necropolis has become an oasis for wildlife and city dwellers alike offering a peaceful haven from the bustle of the city and spectacular views across the Clyde Valley.
