Measure for Measure
Vienna, City of Dreams, circa 1900: waltzes, whipped cream - and brothels; a city in aesthetic and intellectual ferment, whose writers, thinkers, composers and painters (think Freud, Klimt, Schoenberg) fill the coffee-houses with urgent debate. A good place to set Shakespeare's Measure for Measure, that 'septic folk-tale' of spell-binding philosophical clashes - and down-and-dirty sex. A Duke leaves his Deputy to clean up the city: brothels are pulled down, a young man is to be executed for impregnating his fiancée. But the Deputy himself turns rapacious, overwhelmed by lust for a novice nun, the condemned man's sisterŠ.Compassion must temper justice and humility temper pride before the characters are able to limp off to make the best of what remains. As you do.
